Microaggressions Training

Understanding the everyday comments, behaviours and assumptions that can unintentionally exclude others.

About this Microaggressions course

Microaggressions are often small and unintended, but their impact adds up. This session helps people recognise common examples, understand why they matter, and respond constructively, whether they've witnessed one, experienced one or been told they've caused one.

What the session covers

  1. 01What microaggressions are, with realistic examples
  2. 02Why impact matters as much as intent
  3. 03Microaggressions linked to race, gender, sexuality, disability, accent and language
  4. 04Responding well when you've caused offence
  5. 05Stepping in as a colleague or manager

What participants will learn

  • Define microaggressions and recognise common examples
  • Understand the cumulative impact on wellbeing and belonging
  • Respond openly when someone raises a concern about something you said
  • Step in supportively when you see it happen to others

Why Microaggressions training matters in Wales

Both the Anti-racist Wales Action Plan and the LGBTQ+ Action Plan for Wales recognise that exclusion often happens through everyday behaviour, not only through obvious discrimination. In Wales that can include comments about accents, the Welsh language or where someone is from. Understanding microaggressions helps teams build the day-to-day respect that makes people want to stay.

  • Supports the aims of Wales's anti-racism and LGBTQ+ action plans
  • Improves belonging, wellbeing and retention
  • Gives people the language to raise and respond to concerns

Who it's for

All staff and teams who want to strengthen day-to-day respect. It's suitable for local authorities, NHS Wales organisations, schools, colleges, universities, housing associations, charities and private-sector employers.

How it's delivered

Sessions are interactive and discussion-based, using realistic workplace scenarios rather than lectures. We create a respectful space where people can ask questions honestly. For in-house groups, we adapt examples, length and emphasis to reflect your sector, policies and priorities.

Ask a question

Do you deliver Microaggressions training across Wales?

Yes. We deliver Microaggressions training online to teams anywhere in Wales, and face-to-face at your venue, including in Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Bridgend, Wrexham, Merthyr Tydfil, Carmarthen, Aberystwyth, Bangor and Llandudno, as well as rural communities across all 22 local authority areas.

How long is the Microaggressions course?

The standard course runs for 2 hours. For in-house groups we can shorten, extend or split it across sessions to suit shift patterns and service pressures.

Can the training be tailored for our organisation?

Yes. For in-house bookings we adapt examples, case studies and emphasis to your sector, whether that's a local authority, health board, school, university, charity or private employer, and can reflect your own policies.

Isn't this just about people being too sensitive?

It's a common question, and we welcome it in the room. The session shows how small, repeated comments add up, using examples people recognise, so participants can reach their own conclusions.
