Intersectionality Training

Understanding how different parts of identity overlap and shape people's experiences.

About this Intersectionality course

People don't experience the world one characteristic at a time. This session explains intersectionality clearly and shows how considering overlapping identities leads to better policies, services and support.

What the session covers

  1. 01Where intersectionality comes from
  2. 02How identities overlap: race, gender, disability, sexuality, class and more
  3. 03Rurality and socio-economic disadvantage in Wales
  4. 04Using an intersectional lens on data and policy
  5. 05Avoiding one-size-fits-all approaches

What participants will learn

  • Explain intersectionality and where the idea comes from
  • Recognise how overlapping identities can compound disadvantage
  • Apply an intersectional lens to policies, data and services
  • Avoid one-size-fits-all approaches to inclusion

Why Intersectionality training matters in Wales

Welsh Government action plans on race, LGBTQ+ equality and gender increasingly recognise that people's experiences are shaped by more than one part of who they are. In Wales, rurality, the Welsh language and socio-economic disadvantage add further layers, and the Socio-economic Duty asks public bodies to consider them. Organisations that understand intersectionality design fairer policies and services.

  • Reflects intersectional approaches in Welsh equality action plans
  • Connects protected characteristics with the Socio-economic Duty
  • Leads to better-targeted policies and services

Who it's for

EDI leads, policy officers, managers and staff networks. It's suitable for local authorities, NHS Wales organisations, schools, colleges, universities, housing associations, charities and private-sector employers.

How it's delivered

Sessions are interactive and discussion-based, using realistic workplace scenarios rather than lectures. We create a respectful space where people can ask questions honestly. For in-house groups, we adapt examples, length and emphasis to reflect your sector, policies and priorities.
