Why Disability Awareness training matters in Wales

Around one in five people in Wales identified as disabled in the 2021 Census, and the Welsh Government has long been committed to the social model of disability. That means organisations across Wales are expected to remove the barriers they create, whether physical, digital or attitudinal, rather than focusing on people's impairments.

  • Reflects the Welsh Government's commitment to the social model
  • Supports the duty to make reasonable adjustments
  • Improves access to services and employment

Who it's for

All staff, managers and anyone involved in service design. It's suitable for local authorities, NHS Wales organisations, schools, colleges, universities, housing associations, charities and private-sector employers.

How it's delivered

Sessions are interactive and discussion-based, using realistic workplace scenarios rather than lectures. We create a respectful space where people can ask questions honestly. For in-house groups, we adapt examples, length and emphasis to reflect your sector, policies and priorities.

What is the social model of disability?

It's the understanding that people are disabled by barriers in society, such as inaccessible buildings, information or attitudes, rather than by their impairment. It's the approach adopted by the Welsh Government, and it runs throughout the course.
